Finally....An Update!

I started teaching again and it has caused me to stink at blogging on a regular basis. Our framers and contractor have made a lot of progress on the house. It seems like they have been stick building the roof FOREVER. I think it is just a time consuming process. It is comforting to know that they take their time and do a great job. I can't wait for Fall and cooler weather so that they can work longer days. We have had such a hot Summer that they work up until noon and call it a day...and I don't blame them. Here are some pictures taken about 6 days ago (so they have made even more progress on the house since these were taken).

The windows and exterior doors are ordered, which means one thing...we are that much closer to being "in the dry." WAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, I need to catch some Zzzzz's because this little girl:

is having her 4th birthday party TODAY!

Whirlwind of a Week

The trusses are up, without the peaks, but it looks so good! I would have loved to have taken a picture of the crane putting the trusses on, but I was at in-service. J got a picture on his phone and that crane was so stinkin' high in the sky! It was very exciting to see.

On Monday, maybe it was Monday?, we went to a brick company with no luck. We picked out a brick we thought we liked and the salesperson gave us a few addresses of houses with that brick. As we drove up to the house, we both basically said "uugghh" simultaneously. We didn't like it one bit. So we drove around a few neighborhoods and wrote down addresses of houses with brick we did like. Most of the houses were not in her computer, so they were done by another company. One brick we liked was the most expensive brick they sold. Eeeek! That won't help with staying on budget. We called it a day and made an appointment at a different brick company with a larger variety of bricks. We went to our appt yesterday. Funny story- we drove around a few months back looking at houses and found a brick we loved, but didn't really know how to find out who made the brick. When my husband called this company to set up yesterday's appt he explained the brick to the lady and she knew exactly which house we were talking about. They did the brick! We were ecstatic! So we walked in yesterday and we just knew that was it. She showed us several pictures on her computer of houses that have used it and then we drove by two houses with it. IN LOVE. So this is the brick we have chosen. And did I mention we will be UNDER BUDGET? Wahoo!! It is called Rustique Shakewood and it's a concrete brick.

Those pictures are of the same house and they definitely don't do the brick justice. The color looks different when the sun is shining on it. It's a tan color and has a tumbled/antiqued looking edge. We will be doing black light fixtures, shutters, front door, garage door, and I think black architectural shingles on the roof. I can't wait to see it all finished.

The first day we went to look at brick, we also chose our front door, sidelights, transom, and windows. It was an exhausting day to say the least. I am thrilled with our window choice. We are going with Andersen windows. Since we saw that house with our brick several months back, I knew that a regular white window would stand out, unless we did white trim around the house (and we are not). I told J that I wanted a dark window on the outside and white on the inside. He kind of looked at me strange, like that was impossible. I told him to talk to David, our contractor, about it and he did. David found this Andersen window and we love it. It is going to match the brick so much better than a white or almond colored window. We priced windows similar to these at Lowes, but they were more expensive than this particular window. This is going to be a splurge for us, but since we have been under budget on the front door/sidelights, brick, and trusses we think it is a good decision.

J and I have been so busy this week preparing our classrooms for kids. He has been in his room until midnight a couple times this week. He taught a technology workshop for his co-workers on Friday. And I have been bringing baskets full of things to work on for school. Ready or not, the kids will be coming! ;) J has open house Tuesday evening and I have open house Wednesday afternoon. We are hoping for a fun and stress-free (ha!) school year.

Trusses, Porches, and Brick- Oh My!

The guys have been working hard on the front and back porch while the trusses are being made. The front porch is ready for cement and will get some tomorrow morning after the termite guy sprays the fill dirt. There are support walls up in the garage and foyer...everything is ready for the trusses that will be delivered and put up tomorrow.

J and I start back to work this week, so we have been looking at windows and trying to make a decision (yes still...we started the window search weeks ago), and we have picked out a front door and sidelights that we like. Tomorrow we will be going to pick out the brick- pray for me! ;) I have dreaded this....I know exactly what I want, but just can't find it and am scared to commit to a little brick when I can't see a whole house with it!

Busy week...I'm hoping once school starts everything will go a lot quicker (or seem to) because the house won't be my primary focus. Say a special prayer for J as he is starting a new job at a new school and taking the last few classes for his masters, graduating in Dec...all while building our house! :)

Still Framing

The house is looking A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! We have walked through it several times (almost every night) and I am a little more comfortable with the size of the rooms. It is just so deceiving right now. I love that we can now refer to it as "the house" when talking with our little girl instead of "the lot." G loves her room and wanted to sit in her window tonight for a picture.

This is the single stall of the garage.

And this is the double stall on the left side of the garage.

This is a door to the left of the garage that we will go in when the garage doors are down. We think we will love having this feature for family that comes over all the time who wouldn't usually use the front door. It will be easier than putting the garage door up for them. :)

Here is the door inside of the garage that will go directly to the mudroom. The bracing makes it kind of hard to see, but it's right where the step is.

This is the mudroom. The window will be over the folding table which will be right next to my LG graphite front loading washer and dryer. (Dreaming, dreaming. It's not in the budget. We would have to be under budget for me to get those beauties. Shux.) The cubbies will be opposite this wall.

This will be the dining room. It will have a full column close to the center of the entrance into the dining room and half columns against the wall on each end of the entrance, if that makes any sense at all.

Here is the kitchen. They just got the beam up today. We are thinking it will be stained and cased in the same wood as the island, a dark walnut. If you go through the doorway in the kitchen, my desk will be on the right and the walk-in pantry/safe room is on the left.

This will be the foyer and the opening will be the front door. It will just be a single door with sidelights and a transom above. I am excited to have a true foyer.

The framers will be busy all week, finishing framing in the garage and some closets. The trusses should be delivered sometime this week and once those are up they will stick build the rest of the roof. The front porch will also be built in the next few days. I am just tickled with the progress they have made in the last week!
